The Entertainment Industry will keep Growing

Despite the fear that recession was going to affect it badly, the entertainment industry has continued to boom. The consumers continue to spend a large portion of their income on entertainment.  From 2000 to 2008 expenditure on entertainment as a function of income rose by 15%. Employment in this industry also rose impressively.  Employment saw a growth of close to 20% overall in the entertainment industry. Not just this, the industry itself saw an overall growth of 66% during the period from 1998 to 2010. Content production in the industry is also growing at a incredible pace. It would not be wrong to say that it is an age of absolute abundance in entertainment for the consumers. Not just the amount of content being produced but the variety is also large which is accessible to a larger group of consumers than it was ever before.
For the creators of entertainment content it is an amazing age of opportunities. With restrictions slowly falling more and more people are entering the arena to become content creators. Increasingly the internet is being used to publish, promote, distribute as well as sell the entertainment products. As studies show internet has added to the pace with which the industry was growing. In fact entertainment is one of the industries which has benefitted the most from internet and use of internet tools. It won’t be wrong to say either that internet has become the second avenue of entertainment.
The growth of entertainment industry has not remained limited to US but instead worldwide other countries have also experienced similar growth.  The hype around China has become the loudest in the film industry category especially. Yet, studies have revealed that the scene will continue to be dominated by US in the entertainment and even the film industry. Price Waterhouse Coopers in its 2013-17 Global Entertainment and Media Outlook mentions that US will continue to dominate the booming entertainment and media markets for years to come. During 2012 the US entertainment and media market generated around 29% of the worldwide revenue.  PwC expects that US is going to move above the $100 billion line in 2016. Netflix, Hulu and Amazon are going to be the biggest contributors to this growth. PwC also cited that piracy was going to remain a problem even in the coming years. Overall, in the industry another segment that continues to grow fast is video games. In the global E&M market US is going to remain the leader coming before Japan, China, Germany UK and France.

The MPAA

The MPAA is the association that deals with the film and television industry. The Motion Picture Association of America or MPAA is the association that integrates the major US film studios. The MPAA describes themselves as the voice of the American motion picture, home video and television industries in the United States and around the world. MPAA's members are the six major U.S. motion picture studios.[MPAA]

The MPAA protects the creative works of films and shows, rate movies and deal with piracy issues. What brings more controversy to the MPAA is their rating system. The rating process is voluntary, so filmmakers and producers do not have to submit their movies to receive a rating. Films can be edited and resubmitted to receive a new rating, and a rating may also be appealed.[Ratings]

The movie rating system has had a number of critics, including Roger Ebert, who argues that the system places too much emphasis on not showing sex while allowing the portrayal of massive amounts of gruesome violence. Moreover, he argues that the rating system is geared toward looking at trivial aspects of the movie (such as the number of times a profane word is used) rather than at the general theme of the movie (for example, does the movie realistically depict the consequences of sex and violence). The MPAA has a lot of people that would love for them to not exist, but the truth is that they deal with important issues such as piracy.

Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs has always been inspiring people from all over the world and performing any kind of role. Steve Jobs was known to keep secrets and not to share many things unless it is implemented completely and the prototype completed. This speech is one of the exceptions when he talks about some of the secrets, his life, past and present and discusses various aspects of life so that a person can come out of the adversities.

One of the famous quotes of Steve Jobs was:“If you live each day of your life as if it’s your last, some day you will most certainly be right.” [TED Steve Jobs]

Steve jobs was able to inspire the audience very easily since he talks about all the problems he had in his life and then he gave a solution for the same. Normally whenever a person talks about the problem and solution, there is no real example to quote for but this time the person giving the information actually had seen the situation can came out of the same. Getting thrown from a company, which he has created, and then coming back as the CEO is very tough for any person but he made it possible. He has learned many new arts and started with Pixar and got involved with many other small companies.

According to him, getting fired from his own company was actually a boon to him since he was able to learn a lot in the time period and therefore his level of knowledge increased a lot. He came back very strongly to the company: Apple and then took it to the new heights of success. This is one of the events that have been inspiring many leaders of the future. This would help many young generations to become future leaders. [Success]

This speech is full of motivating and the way of working when the time is hard for the person. It inspires me since it is always difficult for me to work at the time of hardship but this speech helps me in understanding and analyzing the situation and work accordingly. He also talked about the rumors of his death and illness. The best part of the speech is the way he handles the pressure.

IT IS HARD TO MAKE IT IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY...

This year I started to work in a small recording studio, and I have talked with many talented people who have struggle to make it in the business. To work or be sign with a label House is the desire of countless artists since they are able to make great advances of money, hire the best recording studios, with the best music producers of video that they can spend on the promotion and implementation of the product in stores. One of the objectives of a label is the promotion, marketing and advertising, and the music that interprets an artist. This requires a large financial investment to the largest number of possible audience. [Music Think Tank]

It takes talent, good promotion and enough luck to be engaged. Even so, fame and success are not guaranteed. Almost all the musicians I know dream of a recording contract which remove them anonymity, take them to fame, money and a life with eternal feast with tours,  and beautiful groupies at their feet.  They believe that to make it they only need talent, and eventually a record producer will discover them into glittering world stars. Just look the Billboard charts, I really  consider it lacks talent. Reality is that they are other factors that affect the design and success of any artist.

I know dedicated and excellent musicians who have never managed a contract or sign with a major label, who spend hours practicing and in fact are virtuous and talented musicians, but unfortunately this is not enough to "make it" in the music entertainment industry. What is needed for them to achieve the cherished dream? After consulting several characters of the record industry, the most important is that the artist or band managed to release their first album, whether paying the costs to themselves or through an agreement with an independent record label. These seals do not have the capacity of distribution or investment of large multinationals like the "EMI" or "Warner" label, but can help to better define the artistic concept and project business to the artist, endowing it with a team, usually press agents and connecting with influential people in the industry. From there they should work hard and promote the project. [Tom Hess]

Today, with the possibility of the internet, artists had the possibility to disseminate their work in masse. On pages such as  www.purevolume.com new artists that have not yet signed a recording contract can showcase their work and from there to promote themselves. With the eventual spread of the market through the network perhaps delivering real possibilities.

There is no such thing as bad publicity

Today, in my first blog post, I am going to discuss the phrase; there is no such thing as bad publicity. Publicity is defined in Merriam- Webster’s Dictionary as something that attracts the attention of the public or an act or device designed to attract public interest. The definition itself doesn’t talk about classifying it as bad or good; it only talks about getting noticed and bringing attention from the public. Personally I agree with this phrase I find that any publicity is good the important thing is being talked about or being in the radar.

Oscar Wild once said; “There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.” This quote is the best example of what I want to demonstrate in this post. Reality is, that the people in the entertainment industry that are more successful, are the ones who are in the radar no matter their actions. The perfect recent example is the one of Miley Cyrus.  Miley Cyrus also thinks there is no such thing as bad publicity and reality is that Miley’s scandalous VMA performance resulted in 306,000 tweets a minute according to The Guardian, Lost in ShowBiz. Miley, herself said that she most be doing something right because she is being talked about. The truth is Miley has received very negative comments, but from a commercial perspective this is gold. Miley’s singles on iTunes for her new album are in the top 10 after her performance, so if what she wanted with this was to promote her album, it worked. Recently she broke the record for most viewed video on Vevo with 100,000,000 views in six days.

Publicity is done for getting the attention of others even though some people classify it as good or bad, I personally look at it as an important tool to get the job done. Publicity for the entertainment industry is one of the most important tools and the exposure Miley Cyrus had in the VMA’s was enough to put her new unreleased album on the top of the list.
